A day in the life of Jacqueline St. Hilaire

St. Hilaire is a broker sales representative at Colonial Life in Plano, Texas.

7:00 a.m.
My weeks can vary dramatically depending on what is going on. But I’m usually up around 7:00 am or so and do a workout of some kind. It will be a brisk two mile walk/run at the park with my dog. If the weather isn’t so good it might be Pilates or Wii dance. I like variety, so I tend to break it up.

8:30 a.m.
I try to be cleaned up and ready for the day. A cappuccino and a small breakfast while catching up on some email works best. I try to plan ahead the night before for the calls I need to make the next day to keep me on target. This is when I start those calls. I also double check that my appointments or enrollments outside the office are ready to go with all the necessary information and I know where I’m going.

10:00 a.m.
I make calls to existing clients to find out about new hires and conduct enrollments for those individuals as necessary. While I am out doing enrollments I will call on any of my broker clients in the area to see if I can help.

12:00 p.m.

I eat a little lunch and run proposals for any cases I am working on. I also check email and phone messages. This is also a good time to check Facebook and LinkedIn. I am trying to increase my presence on social media in an effort to promote my services and I am still learning how best to make an impact. I belong to several organizations that have monthly networking luncheons, so I try to attend these types of events at least four times a month.

1:00 p.m.
Again, I make calls and do follow-up on cases that need my attention.

2:00 p.m.
I frequently go on appointments to develop new brokers or attend meetings with brokers who are opening new cases. While I am in the area, I may also cold-call a few brokers that are in the area to work on earning their business as well.

4:30 p.m.
Toward the end of the work day, I work on training items, reading articles on the Affordable Care Act and take some time to review my Texas Association of Health Underwriters board preparations for next fiscal year. I also use this time for the business aspects of being self-employed and prepare for my appointments the next day to ensure that I have everything.

6:00 p.m.
I enjoy a little TV while preparing and eating dinner — a guilty pleasure to get my mind off the routine of the day. I do strength and stretching exercises for my back and abs; I tend to multi-task most of the time so it’s not very often that I simply watch TV. However, if my grandson Milo wants to come and hang with me, that takes precedence over everything else. He is growing up way too fast and I want to enjoy him as much as I can since he lives nearby.

9:00 p.m.
I like to read a book before I turn in for at least an hour. I read a lot and a wide variety, but I find that the best thing to read before bed is fiction — nothing serious — just light, easy reading. I enjoy Anne Rice and Stephen King, especially.
