After a successful pilot launch last fall, ADP is making its mobile-enabled retirement services website available to all of its retirement plan administration clients.
Among eligible employees who were offered access to the site last fall, 81% enrolled in their retirement plan at an average deferral rate of 8%.
“Especially among younger workers, there’s an expectation there that it’s a mobile world,” says Chris Augelli, vice president of product marketing and business development for ADP Retirement Services. “There’s an expectation that virtually any service can be reached via the Internet and that going on to a site like this will have a clean interface and a limited number of steps to get you to your end goal.”
As workforce demographics change, “the shift in innovation has gone away from plan sponsor-focused features and it’s really moved to the participant base,” says Augelli. “It’s all about participant outcomes and how providers can partner with sponsors and advisers to help them focus on participants and improve their outcomes.”
According to a recent Principal Financial Group survey, 61% of retirement plan participants say they use a smartphone. Participants using the company’s retirement app have an average deferral rate 11% higher than the average deferral for all participants covered by plans through The Principal. What’s more, over a six-month period, almost twice as many mobile users increased their savings rate compared to the overall pool of participants.
“As we’re moving from Boomers to having large populations of Gen X and Gen Y workers, the way we communicate with these participants to educate them is changing, and mobile solutions is part of the next wave,” says Augelli.
Twice as many 20- to 30-year-olds (24%) found mobile apps helpful in preparing for retirement, compared to only 12% of 40- to 50-year-olds, according to a OneAmerica survey conducted earlier this year. Only 7% of those over 50 found mobile apps helpful.
