For all the signs we’ve seen this year of a small economic recovery, I think recent stats from the Society for Human Resource Management showing that workplace holiday parties are on the rise is as good as any.

Sixty-eight percent of employers will deck the halls this year, compared to 61% in 2009, SHRM finds. Even better news, fewer organizations cancelled holiday parties this year due to finances, down to 8% from 12% in 2010 and 20% in 2009.

"As the economy continues to improve for many businesses, it appears more employers are celebrating the holidays and the end of the year with parties, which act as an employee reward and morale booster," says Evren Esen, manager of the SHRM survey research center.

At EBN, we’re a pretty low-key and fun-loving group, and our holiday get-together won’t be much different. We’re having lunch at a local restaurant, donning tacky reindeer sweaters and other holiday garb to make the event extra festive.
